FRFilming a Horizon Europe project aboard a polar vessel
NEMOSHIP is a Horizon Europe Innovation Action, carried out by a consortium bringing together Ponant, CEA and Siemens. Its objective: optimising the exploitation of large-scale battery systems aboard hybrid and fully electric ships, with the Commandant Charcot, Ponant's polar exploration vessel, as the demonstrator.
The film's mission
The consortium needed a short film able to make a complex technical innovation understandable in a few minutes: optimised hybrid energy management aboard a polar vessel. The challenge wasn't just filming a ship, but making a digital energy management platform legible on screen, while meeting the dissemination requirements specific to Horizon Europe projects.
The shoot
Ten days aboard the Commandant Charcot, between Reykjavik and Greenland, embedded with the project's technical and operational teams. Battery room, control room, bridge, silent-mode navigation trials (on battery power, engine off) and power-peak management tests, interviews with the crew and the consortium's engineers: each sequence documents a concrete aspect of the project, from the batteries to the ship's deck.
What this project says about how we work
- Understanding a technical subject before filming it, in direct contact with the project's engineers and leads, not just the communications team.
- Working with a multi-partner consortium (industry and public research) and delivering content compliant with Horizon Europe dissemination requirements, including EU funding acknowledgment.
- Delivering in both French and English, with technical data animations integrated into the edit.
- Filming fully independently under demanding logistical conditions (a ship, polar weather, a tight schedule), with no support crew aboard.
